How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner for Your Home

by | Jun 17, 2016 | Blog

The temperature is rising in Savannah, Georgia, which means that homeowners are increasingly relying on air conditioners to provide them with comfortable indoor air. Whether you’re buying an AC for a new home construction or you’re looking to replace your old AC, it’s important to choose the right air conditioner unit that meets your family’s needs.

Prioritize Your Features

Air conditioners come with a wide variety of features that boost energy savings. If you’re hoping to save money with a more basic model, you’ll want to make a list of must-have features to ensure you’re getting the type of unit you want. Some energy-saving features to look for include a fan-only switch, a variable-speed blower, large coils, a filter indicator light, and an automatic delay fan switch.

It’s also a good idea to understand SEER ratings. The law now requires all AC units to have a SEER rating of 13 or higher, but the most efficient models rate around 17. Any model with a 14+ rating, though, is considered energy-efficient.

Consider the Warranty

New air conditioners come with warranties, but not all are created equal. Before purchasing your new unit, read its warranty to make sure you understand the terms and restrictions. The warranty will also stipulate how often you need to have the air conditioner serviced, but many units cover repair and replacement costs for up to one year after the purchase date.

Remember, an AC warranty will become void if a non-certified service provider works on the unit, so be sure you only contact professional technicians for your air conditioning service needs.

Decide on the Type of Unit

There are more than just central AC units on the market. Heat pump air conditioners and ductless mini-split systems are just as effective and becoming more popular, thanks to their efficiency. Heat pump air conditioners even bring in warm air during the winter months, providing you with year-round comfort.
