3 Types of Humidifiers for Your Savannah Home

by | Jan 18, 2017 | Blog

Your furnace can make the air in your Savannah, Georgia, home drier in winter and cause cracks in wood floors, furniture, and doors. Dry air also irritates your skin, nose, and throat, makes allergies and asthma worse, and causes static electricity. To make your home feel warmer and more comfortable, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Some of the most popular types of humidifiers are warm mist, cool mist, and ultrasonic devices.

Warm Mist

The vapor from a warm-mist humidifier can help you get rid of cold symptoms and drafts. Most units boil water and then release the vapor as steam, killing bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. Since these humidifiers are hot, you should keep them away from children and flammable objects like curtains. You should also avoid using a warm-mist humidifier with hard water because it could become clogged with mineral deposits.

Cool Mist

Cool-mist humidifiers are safer than warm-mist models, and they don’t use as much energy. Cleaning the tank is easier as well. A fan moves mist into your home, so there’s no heating element needed. However, cool-mist humidifiers usually are noisier than warm mist units.

Ultrasonic Humidifiers

Ultrasonic humidifiers produce a cool fog like cool mist models, but they spread the mist with sound waves instead of a fan. Every ultrasonic unit has a metal diaphragm that vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency. They work a lot like high-frequency speakers, but they don’t actually make any distracting sounds.

After you choose the best type of humidifier for your home, keep the area around your device dry and clean the tank and filter regularly. To prevent mineral buildup with any humidifier, fill it with distilled water instead of tap water.
