The Most Common A/C Problems: Causes and Solutions

by | Jul 9, 2013 | Blog

Regardless of how well you maintain your air conditioning, there’s bound to come a time where it encounters problems. The good news is that most A/C problems fall into one of five categories. This list can help identify what the problem may be. In most cases, you’ll need to call an HVAC technician, but the more information you can provide, the sooner the problem can be solved.

The basics
These basic fixes can all be addressed by you:

  • Windows and doors – Make sure windows and doors are shut tight. Even kids constant running in and out can make it feel like the A/C isn’t running properly.
  • Thermostat – Verify thermostat settings are where they’re supposed to be, and that it is set on the cooling cycle.
  • Filters – Change the air filter regularly to keep air circulating efficiently and improve indoor air quality.
  • Fuses/switches – Let the unit cool down for a few minutes and then check the breakers, as well as the high-pressure switch on the compressor.

Installation and maintenance
Leaking ducts, poor duct design or an improperly installed air conditioner cause problems in the long run. If you aren’t sure who installed your A/C, have it inspected to make sure it was installed correctly. Routine maintenance is essential to prevent A/C problems. If yours hasn’t been serviced this year, call and make an appointment.

Refrigerant
Your A/C must have adequate refrigerant levels in order to cool your home effectively. If there’s a leak or if it wasn’t charged to the manufacturer’s specifications during the last maintenance appointment, you may be suffering the consequences.

Electric failure
Over time, the compressor and fan controls can wear out and need to be replaced. Corroded wires can be a culprit too and are usually addressed during maintenance calls.

Sensor
The thermostat sensor is located near the coils behind the control panel. It should be near, but not touching, the coil. If it’s shifted out of position, it can cause erratic A/C behavior.

Condensate drain
Hot, humid days cause more condensation. Make sure the drain isn’t blocked and that water is draining correctly.
