Choosing the Right Air Filter for Your Georgia Home

by | Mar 15, 2019 | Blog

Many homeowners are not aware that there are multiple types of air filters available. Consider each of these important factors when choosing the right air filter for your Chatham County, Georgia, home.

Type of Model

Before choosing an air filter, it is important to make sure it’s compatible with your current unit. Using the wrong air filter can prevent it from effectively filtering the air. If you choose the wrong size, it may not even fit into your unit. Choosing the wrong air filter can also cause expensive damage to your HVAC unit.

You can usually find the recommended type and size of the air filter listed on your unit. If you aren’t sure, consult with an HVAC professional.

Air Quality

Today’s air filters are designed to improve air quality while also being more efficient. Some household situations, such as homes with poor air quality, families with allergies, or homes with pets, may require an air filter with a higher minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) than the average home. Most air filters will have a rating between four and 13, with the highest MERV ratings filtering out the most particles. It is possible to find MERV ratings ever higher than 13.

Convenience

Many homeowners also care about convenience. Ideally, you should change your air filter every 90 days at minimum. However, you should change your air filter more frequently if you have pets or seasonal allergies. Whether you choose a disposable filter that must be replaced or a reusable one that must be removed, cleaned, and reinserted comes down to preference. Although traditional fiberglass disposable air filters are cheaper, you will have to regularly buy them. Washable air filters are more expensive but last for a much longer period of time.

It is important to choose an air filter that is made for your unit while also considering your air quality needs and convenience preferences. Call us today at Byrd Heating and Air Conditioning to discuss your Chatham County, Georgia, heating and cooling needs.
