Wilmington Island, GA, is located in beautiful Chatham County and is generally considered as a part of wider Savannah. The majority of the official area of the island is under water. Only about one square mile of land houses all the residents of the island. The island can be reached by bridge and is served by the Chatham County public transportation system.
The earliest settlers of Wilmington Island, GA, were likely Native Americans who inhabited the area centuries prior to the arrival of Europeans. However, the island first attracted the attention of cotton moguls in the early 20th century. A large hotel and resort were developed on the island in the 1920s.
