Your AC unit is the heart of your Savannah, Georgia, home, especially during the hot summer months. This means you need to be extra vigilant to make sure your system runs smoothly and has less of a chance of breakdown. One way your system may tell you it’s in need of repair is through noises it may emit. If you notice any of the AC noises below, it’s time to contact an HVAC technician.

Screeching and Squealing

When you hear screeching or squealing sounds coming from your AC unit, it’s often an indication that you have problems with the motor bearings or a worn or frayed belt. While belts are not an expensive repair, if they are not replaced, they can break, stopping your blower and leading to more costly repairs.

Rattling, Thumping, or Clanking

Clanking, thumping, and rattling often indicate that a part has come loose and is moving through the system. This is often a bearing or a screw. These noises can also signal a problem with the motor or blower assembly. If you hear any of these sounds, be sure to shut your system down and call for a repair. If a part is loose and becomes disconnected, it can cause your system to break down.

Thwapping

A fast "thwapping" sound is often a sign that something has become caught in the blower blades. The sound will be similar to that of cards moving in the spokes of a bicycle. Another cause of this noise could be something inside the housing unit coming in contact with the blower while it is running. You’ll want to address this noise immediately, as the caught part or debris will be wearing down the system, making the motor wear out quicker than it should.
