3 Signs Your AC Compressor Is on Its Last Leg

by | Jul 27, 2022 | Blog

Your air compressor is the lifeblood of your Hilton Head, SC home’s cooling system; if it fails and causes your AC to fail, it can be a disaster. The compressor is important because it pressurizes the coolant in your system, helps distribute it around your home, and releases hot air trapped in the system. If your compressor goes out, it’ll require you to get a repair or a complete replacement; but there are signs you can look for to tell when it needs attention.

1. Noisy

If your AC system is starting to make noises it never made before, something is wrong. One obvious sign that the compressor is failing is your AC having difficulty getting started when you first turn it on. You might hear grinding or squealing noises and some light shaking.

2. Not Cool Enough

If you set your thermostat to a low temperature and your home never seems to get cold enough, your air compressor may be the culprit. If it’s not cooling off, your compressor has probably failed. Don’t let the sound of the running fan deceive you; the fan will still run even when the compressor is malfunctioning.

3. Airflow Issues

Check the airflow from the vents if you think your AC is having issues. The compressor is probably going bad if you feel blasts of warm air instead of cold air. The same can be said if the airflow is cold but doesn’t seem strong enough.

If you find any of these issues happening in your home, have them checked out immediately by a professional. Call Byrd Heating and Air Conditioning today to get the ac repairs or replacement you and your family deserve.
